Expedia has released its annual "Flip Flop Report," surveying beach habits the world over. The study, commissioned by the online travel agency and conducted online by research firm Northstar, gauged the behaviors and preferences of 11,165 adults across 24 countries in five continents.
Germans are most likely to sunbathe nude, with 28% of them "having spent a day at the beach in the buff." This is apparently the third year in a row the Germans win the title. However, this year Austria tied the Germans, and then does them one better: Nearly half of Austrian women are likely to go topless at the beach, 49%, compared to only 36% of German women.
The most modest were from Asia. Only 2% of Japanese, 3% of South Korean and 4% of Thai said they have sunbathed nude. But being modest didn't translate into being uncomfortable, Japanese women expressed a high comfort level with toplessness (72%), while few in Malaysia, Indiana and Hong Kong approve of the practice.
